Vitamin D

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for our body. It is also referred to as “calciferol” and is a fat-soluble vitamin. It is present in a few foods, such fortified milk, fortified cereal, salmon, mackerel and sardines. It is also produced when ultraviolet (UV) rays for the sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis. Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations essential for your body.

Why is Vitamin D good for the body?

Vitamin D is also an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. It supports skin and immune health, muscle function as well as brain cell activity. Depending on where you live , how much sunlight you receive and how you address your diet can contribute to your Vitamin D levels.

How much Vitamin D should I take?

The best way to determine what your Vitamin D levels are is with a blood test at your medical clinic. Depending on the results you can take between 800-5000 IU. This should be directed by your health care provider as there are possible interactions with other prescription medications. Too much vitamin D can cause an increase in calcium (hypercalcemia) which can cause problems with the muscles and the heart.

At Enrichment Skin Solutions, we want to know what medications you are currently taking including various vitamins and minerals to correctly recommend aesthetic treatments that are appropriate for you. With that being said we always recommend following the directions by your current primary care provider. Give us a call to schedule your next appointment to address your skin health.
